The ACLU of Vermont exists to protect and expand civil rights and civil liberties in this state. To achieve our mission, our legal program files strategic lawsuits that we believe will best further our priorities, our advocacy program works in the State House to promote legislation that advances Vermonters’ rights, and our communications program helps Vermonters understand their rights and inspires them to take action to protect them.
Although we review and retain the information we receive, we generally do not respond directly. If you submit a report or tell us your story, you should not expect to receive a response from our office.
We welcome stories from Vermonters who believe their rights have been violated. By sharing your experience, you can help us evaluate the status of civil rights and liberties in Vermont, identify emerging issues, and determine where our limited resources are best invested.
Hearing directly from Vermonters is crucial for us to ensure that we are best advocating for our communities, and we carefully review and retain the information we receive. However, we generally do not accept cases for legal representation from the stories that are submitted and are usually unable to reply. Instead, your story may help us advocate for change in the legislature, inform future litigation, and better educate communities about their rights.
Sharing your story does not create an attorney-client relationship, and your information may be shared with the ACLU of Vermont staff. If we have additional questions, we will contact you directly. We receive hundreds of submissions each year, but our resources to respond are limited. Because we are not able to take most cases—even those concerning real injustices—please know that if you do not receive a response, it does not mean that your complaint or story is without merit.
If you want to report a violation or tell us your story to guide our work, please fill out this form. If you would rather submit a paper copy, you may print out this form and mail it to:
