But when people are unable to meet their basic needs, they cannot truly exercise their rights and liberties or participate fully in our democracy. For all of us who care about civil liberties, economic justice is fundamental.

That is why the ACLU of Vermont supports legislation like H.829 that would start to address historic levels of wealth inequality and ensure the wealthiest Vermonters pay their fair share in taxes, to help build a better state for everyone who calls Vermont home. Please contact your lawmakers to help this bill advance through the legislature in 2024.

H.829 would impact only the wealthiest 1% of Vermont residents, and the revenues raised from this legislation can help us make badly needed investments in housing across the state.
