3-16-09: Same-Sex Marriage Bill Up For Consideration

The Legislature returns this week after a two-week hiatus. Top item is S. 115, the same-sex marriage bill. The Senate Judiciary Committee starts its work Monday, and plans to vote the bill out by Friday. That’s a very fast track for a bill of this magnitude.

A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 at 6 p.m. in the well of the House. It`s the only public hearing scheduled so far, so this is an opportunity for voicing opinions -- by attending, and testifying if you`re so inclined. There will likely be a sign-up sheet for testifying; the order of speakers is largely determined by who arrives first.

If you can`t attend personally but still wish to provide testimony, you can submit your comments in writing. Address testimony to Sen. Richard Sears, chair, Senate Judiciary Committee, Statehouse, Montpelier, VT 05602.

Should you wish to send an e-mail message to members of the committee, e-mail addresses for Sen. Seas and other members of the Senate Judiciary Committee (Sens. Campbell, Cummings, Mullin, and Nitka) can be found on the legislative Web site.

The ACLU`s testimony to the committee can be found on our Web site.

The full text of the same-sex marriage bill, S. 115, is on the legislative Web site.
