ACLU-Vt Sues on Behalf of Arrested Protesters

MONTPELIER – The American Civil Liberties Union of Vermont has filed suit against the Brattleboro police officers who arrested four individuals for silently holding signs during a speech given by Governor James Douglas at a public event last spring.

Legislature Opens

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

The 2010 Legislature began its work Tuesday. There were some opening flourishes, but none of the pomp that characterizes the first year of a biennium. Lawmakers got down to business quickly, with full schedules of meetings for most committees for the rest of the week. You can keep up with civil liberties issues through our Legislative Report.

Summer 2010 Legal Interns

The ACLU of Vermont is now accepting applications for summer 2010 legal interns. Applicants should send a cover letter, resume, transcript, and writing sample in PDF format to legal_intern_apps [at] acluvt.org. Applications will be considered as they arrive, with a decision made no later than February 15, 2010.

Changes Needed To PATRIOT Act

A coalition of Vermont groups, including the ACLU-VT, is calling on members of our congressional delegation to push for substantive changes to the USA PATRIOT Act to better protect Americans’ rights. Read the letter.

Fighting Racial Profiling

Government Accountable To All

In mid-October, the ACLU of Vermont filed suit against the Vermont Department of Public Safety to force it to remove an individual listed on the public sex offender registry who should not have been listed.  We took this action because Vermonters have a right to be treated fairly by their government.  They should not have to get a lawyer and file a lawsuit before the government does the right thing.

9-23-09: Long Suspected, Now Confirmed

Sen. Russ Feingold is finally getting confirmation of what many have long suspected — the “sneak-and-peek” provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act have little to do with terrorism and lots to do with cutting corners in ordinary criminal investigations.

ACLU of Vermont Wins Suit Against Residency Restriction

The Washington Superior Court has granted judgment to Christopher Hagan in his lawsuit against the City of Barre, striking the city’s residency restriction ordinance that barred individuals with certain criminal convictions from living within most of Barre.

ACLU Dislodges Torture Report
