Join the discussion Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Billings Library at the University of Vermont.
Vermont has struggled for a number of years with the regulation of marijuana. Medical marijuana was made legal in 2004. In 2008 a bill to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana was passed by the Senate but died in the House. Meanwhile, other states have revised their drug laws.
Marijuana possession and use are still crimes in Vermont, punishable by incarceration. Is that appropriate, and a good use of police and corrections resources? Should first offenses be changed to misdemeanor tickets? Should marijuana be legalized?
Marijuana Resolve, a nonprofit organization focusing on these issues, is sponsoring Tuesday’s discussion. Present will be a panel of Vermont lawmakers to discuss how the state can best respond to marijuana use.
